  • Black Cardstock
  • Metallic Watercolors
  • Cup – for ornament shape
  • Water
  • Round Paintbrush
  • Paper Towels

Step 1

Use an upward sweeping motion to create a tree-like background

To begin, use a round paintbrush to create a tree-like background. Place paintbrush onto paper and gently flip your wrist to the side in an upward, sweeping motion. Paint each stroke using the same technique. Be careful not to completely cover or oversaturate the paper.

Note: Wet layers of watercolor paints will bleed into one another. Dry time between steps will vary based on how much paint is applied to the paper, and what type of paper is used.

Step 2

Then, using metallic watercolors, paint the rim of a plastic cup, cookie cutter, or other item to easily stamp an ornament outline.

Step 3

Next, carefully paint the inside of the ornament.

I love how the metallic watercolor paints shine on back paper! Since these projects are made on paper, they are easily framed, clipped, or displayed in your preferred style for the holiday season. 

This was such a fun and easy project. I always forget how much I love metallic watercolor paints until I pull them out for a project. The way the colors pop on black paper amazes me every time! I can’t help but get excited when projects give colorful and fun results without being hard or expensive to create!
