Halyna Hutchins’s mother declines invite to ‘Rust’ premiere

The mother of late “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins refused to attend the movie’s premiere in Poland Wednesday due to Alec Baldwin’s “refusal” to take responsibility for her daughter’s death on the set of the Western in 2021.

Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey slammed the screening at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival, saying in a statement to Deadline that Baldwin “seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter.”

“Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,” she said. “This is why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of ‘Rust,’ especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter.”

A second statement from Solovey’s attorney, Gloria Allred, said Hutchins’ family had been “disrespected” by Baldwin, who “has never called them to apologize.”

“Even worse, he argued, through his attorneys, that Halyna was emotionally distant from her family in Ukraine. That is false, hurtful, and insulting. Further, the decision not to even call the family to say he is sorry is cruel and dishonors Halyna and her memory,” the statement read.

The statement continued: “Now, a decision has been made to promote “Rust” to buyers in order to make a profit for Alec Baldwin and others that had a role in Halyna’s death. Olga, Anatolii, and Svetlana will not agree with this plan to exploit Halyna’s death.”

According to Deadline, Hutchins’ father and sister also planned to skip the film’s screening. It was not immediately clear whether her husband, Matt Hutchins, an executive producer on the film, would attend.

Baldwin would also not be in attendance Wednesday, even after involuntary manslaughter charges against him were dropped in August. He faced a maximum of 18 months behind bars for the death of Hutchins, the film’s cinematographer.

Meanwhile, the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving an 18-month sentence for involuntary manslaughter.

Baldwin was accused of recklessly flouting gun safety when he fired a real gun mistakenly loaded with a live round on the set of “Rust,” killing Hutchins, 42, and wounding director Joel Souza in October 2021.

The “Saturday Night Live” actor maintained his innocence, insisting he cocked the hammer but did not pull the trigger on the weapon.

Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, filed a wrongful death suit — which was settled last year. Shortly after, production of “Rust,” which had been paused, resumed with Matthew Hutchins named as executive producer of the film.

Production of the film wrapped in May 2023.
