Classic Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipe | Bon Appétit

Must Read

A classic cosmopolitan cocktail is tart, citrusy, and just sweet enough, with a signature pink hue thanks to a splash of cranberry juice. You can think of it like a cranberry margarita, with the tequila swapped for vodka, plus fresh lime juice for tang, and a dash of orange liqueur. The combination comes together in a shaker to create a bright, refreshing drink that any gaggle of girlfriends (you know the ones) is apt to love.

The key to this cosmo recipe is using the right cranberry juice. Look for a bottle labeled “cranberry juice cocktail,” a sweetened cranberry drink that balances the fresh lime and orange liqueur. Pure 100% cranberry juice is considerably more tart; if that’s what you have, see the substitution below.

Cosmopolitan FAQs

What is cranberry juice cocktail? (And what to do if you don’t have it.)

Cranberry juice cocktail is a sweetened cranberry drink, commonly sold by brands like Ocean Spray. It’s different from bottles labeled “100% cranberry juice,” which are considerably more tart and have a concentrated, tannic quality. Cranberry juice cocktail provides enough sweetness to balance the fresh lime and orange liqueur while giving the cosmopolitan its familiar bright pink color.

If you accidentally bought 100% cranberry juice, use ¾ oz. pure unsweetened cranberry juice, plus ½ tsp. simple syrup in place of the 1 oz. cranberry juice cocktail.

Is Cointreau or triple sec better for a cosmopolitan?

In fact, Cointreau is a type of triple sec, so you can use a bottle labeled as either in a cosmopolitan. Cointreau has a bright, floral orange flavor that works particularly well with cranberry and lime, but any good-quality triple sec is an easy substitute.

Wondering about other types of orange liqueur? Dry curaçao will make a slightly less sweet drink with an aura of baking spice (clove, nutmeg, etc.)—giving, perhaps, a nice Thanksgiving twist on the standard cosmo. Grand Marnier has a much deeper, warmer flavor and will make the drink slightly heavier. Either can be used as a 1:1 swap.

Which vodka is best for a cosmopolitan?

Did Sex and the City invent the cosmopolitan?

When it started airing in the late 1990s, HBO’s Sex and the City turned the cosmopolitan into an international phenomenon, but the drink had made several rounds before Carrie Bradshaw started ordering them.

Versions circulated in the queer communities of Provincetown and San Francisco for years before bartender Toby Cecchini (of Brooklyn’s Long Island Bar) helped establish the modern cosmo at New York icon Odeon in the late 1980s. As he told former BA editor Priya Krishna in an oral history of the drink, a colleague’s friends introduced him to a version made with well vodka, lime syrup, and grenadine. “It was gross, but it looked pretty,” Cecchini recalled. He reworked it with newly-on-the-market Absolut Citron, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and cranberry juice. The drink caught on with the Odeon’s staff, celebrity clientele like Madonna and Sandra Bernhard, and the downtown Manhattan crowd.

Isn’t a cosmopolitan just a vodka cranberry?

Not quite. Sure, both drinks contain vodka and cranberry juice, but that’s where the similarities end. A cosmopolitan adds fresh lime juice and orange liqueur, giving the cosmo its distinctive tart, citrusy flavor. It’s also a shaken cocktail, which provides some dilution and slightly aerates the drink for balance. A vodka cranberry is a standard highball, typically built in the glass from which it’s sipped.
