Alexander Hamilton facts FOR KIDS
- Alexander Hamilton was born in 1755 or 1757 in Charlestown, Nevis. He was a military officer, statesman, and one of the Founding Fathers who served as the first Secretary of the Treasury from 1789 to 1795.
- Hamilton’s father abandoned the family in 1766, and his mother died when he was 13 years old, leaving him orphaned at a young age.
- During the Revolutionary War, Hamilton served as a field commander in the Continental Army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, serving as a member of George Washington’s staff.
- After the war, Hamilton became one of the most influential founding fathers of the new nation, playing a pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention and advocating for a strong national government.
- In 1787, Hamilton joined with James Madison and John Jay to write a series of essays known as the Federalist Papers, which argued for the ratification of the Constitution.
- In 1789, George Washington appointed Hamilton as the first Secretary of the Treasury, where he created the First Bank of the United States and helped establish a stable banking system for the country.
- Hamilton married Elizabeth Schuyler, a member of a prominent New York family, in 1780, and they had eight children together.
- Hamilton was a close confidant of Washington and often referred to as his “right-hand man.”
- During the Revolutionary War, Hamilton fought in several battles, including the Battle of White Plains in New York and the Battle of Trenton in New Jersey.
- Hamilton had a political rivalry with Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, who killed Hamilton in a famous duel in 1804.
