Create a Charming Bird House and Feeder Using Tin Cans

Today we are making a tin can bird feeder and bird house. Kids of all ages will love making this tin can bird feeder and house combo. It’s a great way to recycle and an even better way to help take care of nature! It’s simple to make and only requires a few tools and basic craft supplies. Tin Can Bird Feeder and House

First and foremost, kids will need adult help and/or supervision with this craft depending on their age because it will involve sharp edges and we don’t want any cuts or injuries.

But this tin can bird feeder is a great way to upcycle and make something that gives back to nature. Who doesn’t love birds after all? So without further ado, let’s make a tin can bird feeder and house.

Supplies Needed To Make This Tin Can Bird Feeder/House

How To Make A Tin Can Bird Feeder

Step 1

Use your can opener to open half of the tin side.

Take the can opener to cut half of the bottom can.

Step 2

Fold the half of the tin over. Cover any remaining edges with heavy tape.

Now fold over the tin lid.

Craft Notes:

An adult needs to carefully fold the half of the bottom in a form of a crescent, the edges will be sharp. You can use pliers.

Step 3

Trace the can over the thick cardboard and cut out the circle. Make it a little smaller than the can so it can fit in the middle of the can.

Step 4

Use the heavy duty tape to secure the circle into the can. That circle is the divider between the feeder and house.

Step 5

The side with the half circle, fill it with your birdseed.

How To Make A Tin Can Bird House

Step 1

Cut a circle opening into the lid of your coffee tin.

Step 2

Drill a hole in the top of your can.

Step 3

Take some yarn and tie at one end. Tie a couple knots to make it large. Or tie it and not it around something like a washer.

Craft Notes

Don’t have a drill? Use a hot glue gun and twine or yard to wrap around the can and make a hanging string.

Step 4

Push the yard through the hole carefully.

Step 5

Take your hole punch and make a hole below the big circle.

Step 6

Jab the pencil into the smaller hole. This is your bird perch.

Step 7

Secure the lid to your tin can with heavy duty tape.

Step 8

You can fill the house with bits of yarn, grass, etc.

Step 9

Tie your bird feeder/house to a tree branch.

Our Experience With This Tin Can Bird Feeder/House Craft

We had a lot of fun with this tin can bird feeder craft. It did require a lot of help from me, but that’s okay. We like to upcycle and recycle when we can and we also like to feed the birds.

So it was a fun way to help take care of nature. And for the little ones who couldn’t really participate, I let them cut the yarn, add stuff into the bird house and add bird seed to the feeder side.
