Halo Infinite did have a battle royale mode in development, confirms former dev – WGB

Must Read

A former developer who worked on Halo Infinite has confirmed that there was a battle royale mode in development for the game, but it was sadly cancelled despite being “a fantastic experience”.

Rumours of a battle royale mode for Infinite have been circulating for years, with the folk at Certain Affinity usually being the believed culprits. Jez Corden of Windows Central reported on the idea in early 2022, for example.

Well, it seems those reports were indeed correct. Former design director for Certain Affinity Mike Clopper, who just recently joined Raven Software at Activision-Blizzard, specifically refers to a battle royale mode on his LinkedIn page.

“I led a large team of designers working on a cancelled Battle Royale mode for Halo,” he wrote. “I believe this product could have been a game changer for the franchise. We loved playing it and working on it, was a fantastic experience in spite of its cancelation.”

While the battle royale concept has become rather overplayed, I think a Halo Infinite spin on the idea could have been a lot of fun, and may have helped to keep the game relevant.

As for Halo Infinite, developer 343 announced the other day that its rebranding itself as Halo Studios and is working on multiple games, all of which will be running on Unreal Engine 5.

What do you guys think? Would you like to have seen a battle royale in Infinite?
